This Collins KWS-1 and 75A-4 were donated by Ken Benner WØLHV.
In 2001, Ken sold his home in Saint Paul to move to a warmer climate and graciously thought of us on his way out of town. The 1000 watt SSB, AM, & CW KWS1 transmitter was introduced in 1955 and originally sold for $1,995.00. Its companion 75A-4 receiver was Collins' first Single Sideband amateur receiver.
It has 22 tubes and originally sold for $495. Together, they were called "The Gold Dust Twins" and they made, for the first time, SSB a practical, reliable reality.
We were able to complete the installation
with a rare Collins 312A-1 loudspeaker donated years ago by the late Boyd Phelps W9BP, a close friend of Museum founder Joe Pavek WØOEP.
Thank you, Ken! |
